When you are miserable with allergies or a cold and need something soothing to sip on at night, I introduce the Honey Bourbon Toddy. This hot seasonal mixture of booze, water, honey, citrus and spices will soothe, coddle, and make everything right in your world - the equivalent of Mom.
The warm adult beverage does the trick to calm my cough and help me sleep. Well, it's actually the honey that does the trick, but the bourbon sure doesn't hurt. Taking a full spoonful of honey has been shown to be very effective at calming nighttime coughs but not as fun as this adult cough remedy.
Ingredients
4 ounces water
2 tablespoons lemon juice (from a real lemon)
2 tablespoons local honey
2 ounces bourbon (I like Bulleit or TX Whiskey)
6 cloves
1 cinnamon stick
In a microwavable mug measure out water and lemon juice and heat until piping hot. Next, stir in local honey and bourbon. I use a loose tea steeper to infuse the cup with cloves, but this is optional. If you want to be extra fancy, twist a strip of lemon peel over each drink, then add to glass. Stir with a cinnamon stick and serve. Goodnight.
